She looked to Jitterbug. "Good." She said gently looking up at him. At his assumption her violet eyes flicked from happy to pained, but she averted her gaze quickly. When she looked back at him there was still pain there in her eyes put she pushed it aside. "Figure skating, it was the one thing I loved more than painting. I had no choice though, I had to give it up." She said gently looking back to Jitterbug. The puppy obviously senced her pain because her head lifted and she nudged at Maddie's hand gently as if to comfort.

Mathis's heart broke a bit when he listened to her words. They were so full of pain. He felt bad that he had brought it up but he wanted to know everything about her. He wasn't going to ask anymore questions though, at least not in public. He watched as there food came and tried to force a smile. "Things will get better," He said all though he wasn't sure, "Or at least thats what I've heard."

"Things already have, I at least can still paint." She said gently looking to the waitress as she set the food on the table. She looked to her food for a moment then reached for the ketchup for her fries and then she took the hotdog and started to cut it up into bite sized pieces for Jitterbug and set it on a napkin and on the ground for her. "I don't know how I would have made it this far if I couldn't paint or sketch." She said as she reached for a fry and ate it looking at her plate in thought.

"That is the great thing about art. It is the only way of expression for some people." He used to write to get all of his emotions out. He never would show his emotions to anyone, the only one who had the chance was his notepad. He still wasn't one for showing his emotions. He hadn't met anyone he trusted enough yet. Maybe that was going to change, he thought as looked at Maddie and smiled lightly.

She looked at him and nodded gently. "Figure skating used to be how I express my emotions, but now my heart not only inspires my paintings, but my emotions do too." She said gently thinking back to the last competition and she frowned. She tooke a bite out of the burger and she looked up at him as she swallowed and took a sip of her drink. She looked around the area in thought and her gaze fell on the people walking by them.

Mathis picked up his burger and took a bite. It was really good and that made him smile but it quickly faded when he looked to Maddie. "I am sorry," He said quietly, "I didn't mean to bring anything up." He really sucked at this. He should have known right away what not to ask or talk about.

She ate a few fries then looked up at him. She frowned gently and shook her head. "Don't be," She said gently looking at him, "You didn't know." She said gently before eating some more of her burger. The one thing that nobody except her aunt and cousin knew was that she had won the regonals competition and was going to go to the nation championships to try and qualify for the Olympic team, but that dream had been destroyed when the car wreck happened. She looked back to him as she ate some fries. "Mathis, please don't be mad with yourself about asking. It actually helps to talk about it sometimes." She said gently looking at him. She knew he had to be beating himself up in his mind and she hated to think of it. She had to say somthing to reassure both of them.

"Just the first date you know," He said with a sigh, "I didn't want you to be sad on the first date." He did want to know everything about her though, even the bad things but if he brought the bad things all out on the first date she would probably be turned away from another date with him. From what he could tell now is that he wanted that second date.

She looked at him and smiled gently. "It's hard to avoid that sometimes." She said gently as she ate a fry. "Why don't you try and cheer me up some?" She asked sweetly as she watched him. She didn't mind that he had asked her. It was better now than later in her opinion. She didn't want to heve to tell him about the wreck and that she couldn't figure skate anymore in one night. That was just too much for her heart to bear.

"Cheer you up huh?" He wasn't exactly sure how to do that. He wasn't like bad a cheering up people he just didn't know what worked for her yet. He would know soon enough but he didn't know yet. "So what is your favorite thing to paint?" He asked. He wondered only cause even though he loved taking pictures of everything. His favorite picture where those of people who were caught off guard. People don't have time to hide behind there mask for the camera if they don't know the camera is there.

She looked at him and smiled gently. She took a bite of her burger as she thought about the question he had asked. "People," She said gently as she swallowed then took a sip, "especially when they're off in their own thoughts. Like what you caught me doing the other day. That and floral sceaneries." She said gently looking at him. "What do you like to take pictures of?" She asked sweetly.

"Well I like to take pictures of just about everything." He said smiling. He loved talking about photography. "But my favorite thing is to take pictures of people completely off guard. That way they don't have time to hide their true selves from the camera." He took another bite of his burger and then some of his drink. "And I definitely like taking pictures of you. Hopefully I will get the chance to take more."

She looked at him smiling gently at the thought. She looked down at Jitterbug who was sitting and begging for something to eat. She looked at her and chuckled then took a fry and handed it to her. The puppy greedily took it and then laid down gently to enjoy it. She looked up at him and giggled sweetly. "Well, don't count on it unless you can get it without me knowing." She said teasingly

"Well those are the best kind." He laughed. "So how is the food?" He asked curiously, "Is it as good as I bragged it would be?" He hoped it was at least good. He thought it was fantastic. There food had kind of a backyard bar-b-que taste. Very homelike. That was really the big turn on for this place.

She giggled as she took another bite of her burger. She nodded gently. "Pretty good, but I haven't had a burger for a few weeks either. It's not as good as a burger place in my hometown." She said sweetly as she watched Jitterbug wander over next to Mathis and whimper to get his attention. She had those wide begging eyes with her droopy expression and Maddie giggled at the puppy.
