Food. Calypso tried not to feel sick at the smell. A few years ago, it would have been easier. But now he didn't eat. Or rarely ate, more accurately. There were those few times, once a month at the most, when he did. And then he really ate. It was at that point now where food seemed to be an all-or-nothing thing. He felt like an addict. The whole can't-have-just-one thing. Recovered alcoholics were like that. They knew they couldn't have 'just one' drink. Because it would never be just one. Calypso was kind of like that with his food. Except that sometimes he forgot. Just one bite, he'd tell himself. Yeah, he was kind of screwed up. But at least he knew it. What good was knowing, if he refused to get help? Well, probably not much good at all. But Calypso just preferred to know he wasn't in denial about it.
With a sigh, he picked up his 'lunch' - a water bottle. Drinking, at least, he could control. And then he stood, trying to figure out just where to sit. He knew no one yet. Calypso sighed, leaning against a wall, as he took a look around the room. There were empty tables, of course, but Calypso was not about to sit alone. He tilted his head to the side slightly, trying to find someone who look interesting. Finally, he had an idea. Calypso pulled out a piece of paper, crumpled up and doodled on, from his pocket. Then, using the wall for a flat surface, he took his marker and wrote out a simple message. Mind if I sit with you?. Then, with a smile, he crumpled it up a bit, and tossed it in a randomly chosen direction. He watched as it hit a person in the head, and laughed a little as he waited for a response from that person.

Jacquie found herself in the cafeteria. She hadn't eaten all day. Maybe because she got so caught up in her music she totally spaced about it. Oh dear. Maybe she should start watching that. Jacquie stared suspiciously at the food she had on her tray. She didn't trust it. At all. Was she wrong for thinking that the food was secretly altered to make everyone mindless drones? No. No she wasn't. Okay, maybe just a little. Jacquie was just a little paranoid. She didn't mean to be, but that's how she was. Paranoid with a side of emo-tastic-ness. Yes. That was Jacquie. Emo Princess. She ruled dark clouds with an iron, bloody fist. Minus the blood. She didn't cut.
She smiled to herself as she walked across the cafeteria, looking for an open table. This would be an interesting day to say the least. Jacquie found a table and sat down. She picked at her food for a moment before pushing it to the side. Jacquie knew there was something in the food. She put her elbows on the table to prop her head up. After a few moments of spacing out, she was brought back down to earth by something hitting the back of her hair. Jacquie blinked and reached back, plucking a piece of paper out of her hair. She opened it up and read it. A small smile crossed her face as she turned around to see who had wrote it.

Calypso watched as the girl found the piece of paper he'd thrown, before he turned his attention to her table. Empty, except for her. That was good. Making things all the less awkward if the girl, whoever she was, decided to let him sit with her. Less people to explain, or not explain, it to. Depending on... well, on everything. What if she just threw out the note, without reading it? Or saw who he was and decided he was some creep? People could be very judgmental. He sighed. Looking at her again, he smiled. She was, at least, reading his note. So far, so good. He supposed if it didn't work, though, if she decided not to let him come sit with her, he could always throw another note at another person. There should be at least one person in the whole cafeteria not freaked out by him. Or was he creepier looking than he'd thought? The idea made him smile.
She was smiling, though. Another good sign. And she was looking for him, it seemed, trying to find the one who'd written it. So Calypso made eye contact, from where he was standing, and nodded slightly. A small smile still on his face. That, he assumed, should make it clear enough that he had been the one to send the note. So now what was left? More waiting. This was the real test here, whether she'd let him now that she knew which person he was. He remained looking in her direction as he waited, not wanting to miss anything that might indicate her answer.

After a few moments of searching, Jacquie finally made eye contact with the person who had thrown the note. He's kinda cute... She thought to herself. Jacquie quickly shook those thoughts out of her head as she waved at him to come sit by her. What would it hurt really? Maybe she'd make a new friend. That would be a good thing. Jacquie didn't have too many friends because when she first came to the school, her English was broken, and she had an accent. When you first arrive at a school, thats when you make the most friends. So, her friend growth was stunted.
She wasn't as self conscious about her voice now. Her accent had faded greatly. The only time it ever showed was when she was angry or sad. Jacquie couldn't keep the tone off of the high emotions. It was just a flaw she would have to work on. Jacquie scooched over a bit so she could make room for the boy who she had yet to meet. This would be very fun.

Seeing the wave, he smiled. So he wasn't completely creepy. Good to know. He laughed, quietly, to himself. Maybe she just had a different idea of creepy than the rest of the world. He made his way over to her table, hoping for the best. He was new, he could really use a friend. As he walked closer, he got a look at her food. And, against his wishes, his stomach growled. Calypso was tempted to growl right back at it. The food didn't even look that edible. Not worth making noise over. He was not going to eat it. That would lead to embarrassment. Beyond embarrassment. Trying to quiet his stomach, he opened his water bottle and took a sip. By the time he'd finished, he was at her table.
Sitting down in the space she'd made for him, Calypso smiled and placed his bottle of water in front of him on the table. "I'm Calypso." He'd save the real randomness for later. No need to scare her too much, at least not before she had the opportunity to introduce herself. Because he wasn't leaving until he knew her name. Now that he could see her up close, he could tell how cute she was.

In fact, Jacquie's ideal of creepy was normal people. She didn't like people who just went along with every new fashion they were thrown. They were like robots. Now that, was creepy to her. Jacquie watched as the boy neared her table. For a moment there he looked a bit...unnerved. She didn't get to confirm this due to the sip of water which covered up his face. Oh well. Maybe it was better that she didn't get to find out. To save her from suspicions later on. She liked not having to be paranoid.
Jacquie smiled as he finally reached the table. She nodded as he introduced himself. "Nice to meet you Calypso. I'm Jacquie." She liked his name. It gave him that...Oh she didn't know...cool air to him. A persons name was probably the most important thing about them. Sometimes it shaped who the person was going to be. Jacquie was the other half whose name was the complete opposite. Her name meant "Supplanter" which is to take the place of someone else through force or scheming. Jacquie wasn't really all that coniving.

"Jacquie." He nodded. "Nice to meet you too." Calypso smiled, poking at the label on his water bottle, as he tried to come up with something to say. He could feel his stomach about to growl again. Great way to get a conversation going, he thought with a nearly silent sigh. If every sentence was interrupted by the noise of it, there was no way he'd convince the girl, Jacquie, that he didn't belong in some sort of mental health clinic. After all, that's what they did with the eating disorder kids, wasn't it? And maybe he wouldn't call it an eating disorder, but that wouldn't stop anyone else from labeling him anorexic or bulimic... depending on whether they were seeing him when he did eat, or when he didn't. At the last possible second, he took another sip of water stopping the chance of another growl.
"Have you ever seen vanilla toothpaste?" he asked, head tilted slightly to the side. For a lack of better questions to ask. He had the tendency to ask the most random questions when he couldn't think of something to say, but still felt the need to say something. Like when meeting a new person. And toothpaste flavors might as well be the subject of the question. He had, after all, thought quite a bit about flavored toothpaste. And then he'd actually gone and tasted every flavor he could find, just so he'd be sure of which kind was best. Calypso was weird like that. Especially when he had nothing better to do.

Jacquie didn't really here the noises coming from Calypso's stomach. She leaned on the table her arms folded. She watched Calypso for a moment or two before reaching into her bag and pulling out a bag of cookies. Jacquie offered a cookie to him before taking a bite out of her own. She made a funny face at the vanilla toothpaste question. She opened her mouth to answer the question, but quickly covered her mouth. That was soo smooth. And embarrassing.
Jacquie quickly swallowed her cookie and smiled, a small blush finding its way onto her cheeks. "I'm sorry about that." She nodded at his question though. "I've heard of it, but I've never tried it. I think Colgate is way out of their league with this flavored toothpaste. Like Jelly Belly and their gourmet Jelly Beans."

Calypso shook his head, at the offer of a cookie. It was easier than saying no thanks, because occasionally saying it led to questions like.. why not? Of course, that had usually been people who knew him well, but not well enough to see him at meal times often. Those who did knew he didn't eat. And either they'd basically say he was psycho and needed help... or they'd ignore it. The friends that ignored it tended to last longer, simply because Calypso could be quite stubborn. And he was determined not to 'get help' for his problem. It was no one's business but his own. After all, it was his body he was starving. And it hadn't killed him yet.
He laughed. "I'm against most flavors, when it comes to toothpaste," Calypso said with a smile. "But vanilla is my one exception. Well... vanilla mint, specifically. It's still got that minty, toothpaste feel without being too strong." Calypso knew he might sound slightly crazy, but that was no big deal. After all, if Jacquie couldn't handle a little bit of insanity, he'd probably get bored hanging out with her soon enough, anyway. Cal kind of needed insanity to, well, keep him sane.

Jacquie nodded and smiled. She put the rest of her cookies back in her bag. She wasn't one to push people into doing things unless it was better for them. Now, Jacquie didn't really know Calypso enough to know how he didn't really eat. If she knew that, she probably would've made him eat a piece of the cookie, but thats about it. She accepted people for who they were. She was different in her own way she supposed. Jacquie crossed her arms and leaned on the table, listening to him. She found Calypso very amusing. She didn't get to talk to people all that much. Or at least today she didn't.
Jacquie nodded and smiled. "Understandable. I tend to lean towards cinnamon. I can't just take mint. It bothers me for some reason." When she was a little girl, Jacquie shyed away from most mint flavored things. She had yet to figure out why.

He laughed. "Mint is weird. It gives my throat an icky feeling... at least, the toothpaste does." Calypso nodded. It was strange like that. Other mint didn't bother him quite so much, though it made it feel all cold when he breathed in. But the toothpaste? Just plain icky. "Cinnamon bothers me slightly... especially when they put in red food coloring and stuff. Why would someone want to scrub their mouth with sticky red goop?" He shrugged. "But not as bad as bubblegum. That's just gross." If any flavor really bothered him, it was bubblegum. You weren't even supposed to eat gum, so why go around flavoring things like it? And besides that, it had this sickeningly sweet pink taste to it. Worse than cotton candy flavors, which he also didn't like.

Jacquie couldn't help but grin. "I know, right? I was never really the biggest fan of mint anything." Yeah. Thin Mint cookies, gum, tooth paste, anything. She couldn't stand the taste. She smiled. "I can stand the red goopy stuff. In retrospect I think it looks kinda pretty." Yep. That was weird enough. She was just waiting for the odd look she knew she would get. Jacquie just shrugged the thought out of her head and continued listening until she got another chance to speak. She shuddered at the thought of bubblegum flavored anything. "Bleh. Toothpaste shouldn't be sugary sweet."

"Like the people who think mint chip ice cream is the best kind ever? It's crazy. Especially that green kind. It's too... something. I don't know. But the white mint looks more high quality, for some reason." Calypso shrugged, and laughed. He had an opinion on almost anything when it came to flavors.... and colors. And, really, the way the colors influenced the flavors. "So in your world you're brushing with pretty red goop?" He smiled, and shook his head. "Especially in that bubblegum, pink, type way. Ew." Calypso laughed, then, and looked at Jacquie. "You know, sometimes I worry about my toothpaste tasting too good, because I'd forget to spit it out. And then die of whatever toxic things they stick in it."

"I know!" She giggled and sat up straighter, fixing her shirt a bit. "I never got why they'd color it green. I always thought green was spearmint. Like...those little mint things they give you at hotels. Those are always white." The only time she could remember a candy being green and mint were those little chocolate and mint things they gave out at the Olive Garden. She always tossed them. Bleh. "Yes, in my world, I am brushing my teeth with pretty red good." She grinned again and leaned back some. "Ewww" Bubblegum, not her choice of flavors. Jacquie laughed some more. "I don't think they're all that toxic. But, they might just be."

He nodded. "Right. Green is supposed to be spearmint, not just plain mint. Yet they go around coloring the ice cream, like it's supposed to make it more appetizing? Or is it just so you won't confuse it with vanilla?" Calypso laughed. "And does that mean they think everyone's dumb enough to buy a box of ice cream based only on the picture, without looking at the flavor?" He grinned, too. "Well, whatever makes you happy then. I think I'd prefer purple goo, but they've yet to invent a purple flavor." Calypso picked up his water, taking a small sip. "It's probably only toxic in large amounts. But they have these warnings about calling the poison control center if you swallow more than a certain amount."
