Mathis stood quietly on the balcony. He pulled his pack of cigarettes out of his pocket and brought one to his lips, he then proceeded to light it. He inhaled a large amount of smoke then slowly blew it out. It was an incredible feeling of relaxation. He needed to relax. He was so tense and he hadn't been able to sleep in the last few days.
His daughter Caitlyn had developed a cold over the last few days and had refused to sleep through the night. He didn't even want to come to school but he was failing as he is, and his mom took a couple days off of work to stay home with her. He was just worried. The cigarette was doing a good job of calming him down though.

Maddie walked up tot he balcony with her iPod playing. She had a shoulder bag with a bit of painting and sketching stuff in it. She didn't notice Mathis at first, but then the smell of smoke came to her nose. Her violet eyes looked around and spotted him and she smirked gently.
Her black hair with red, blue, and purple streaks was up as it usually was in a lavender ribbon that matched the lavender shirt that she had ripped the sleeves off and cut a 'v' into the neck and added laces to the 'v' for a little flare. She also wore black jeans with purple stitching that had oil pants all over them from when ever she was painting.
She took one of the earphones out of one ear and smiled gently. "You know, that's a good way to slowly kill yourself." She said gently with a small smirk. She walked over to the balcony ledge and lifted herself up onto it and sat as she pulled out a sketch book full of drawings and a few pencils.

Mathis turned to see Maddie. He smiled at her as he took another drag of the cigarette that was slowly killing. "Well we all die one day right?" He asked turning around and leaning against the balcony. The dark rings under his eyes were becoming more dark by the minute. He should be using his lunch to sleep but he just couldn't sleep thinking about his daughter.

She smirked as she sketched just the most random thing which she was rather good at sometimes. "Yeah, but why would you want to die of some form of cancer? After all that is how they kill you." She said gently not trying to be rude. She looked up at him and saw the dark circles under his eyes. "Couldn't sleep?" She asked gently looking back down at the sketch that started out as one little flower, but was slowly growing to become an entire garden. The stuff going on with Chad had her more creative side coming out and she didn't understand why. She found herself always drawing gardens and scenery sketches when evershe was angry or upset.

"Yeah, not really," He said turning to her, "Caitlyn's sick, and she keeps me up." She said finishing the cigarette and throwing it to the ground to join the other hundred or so cigarette butts. He looked down at her sketchpad. She was really good. He loved art but wasn't really good at it. Writing and Photography were his strong suits.

She looked to him and smirked. "Caitlyn?" She asked curiously. She didn't even know who this was and he definately didn't know her. "Oh, excuse my manners. Allow me to introduce myself. Maddison West, but you can call me Maddie." She said sweetly holding out a hand that had a few paint smudges and had nails painted black with a pink squiggle down the middle of each one. If it wasn't obvious by the paint smudges all over her clothes, especially her jeans, and her hands she loved to paint. Painting was her stronger ability compared to sketching.

"Oh how rude of me," He said returning the hand, "I am Mathis," He said, "I bet I sound really stupid rambling off about things expecting you to just understand. Just needed to talk I guess, didn't care who it was too." He reached into his pocket and felt his cigarette pack but changed his mind. "Caitlyn is my daughter," He said informing her. Making is story a little less confusing.

She smiled sweetly and nodded. "Nice to meet you Mathis." She said sweetly. She listened to him and chuckled about the rambling. "Don't have to explain yourself. It's fun to listen to people ramble you know." She said smiling sweetly as she reached back to the sketch and started to add in a girl to the garden.
She looked at him a little surprised at first, but then again it really wasn't. "Oh, how old is she?" She asked gently looking at him before looking back down to the sketch then back at him after adding a few small details to the girl.

"She is two," He said with a smile. Yeah he was a little young to be a father but never once in his life would he regret his little girl. She was the most important person in the world and she was his. She was his little girl. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small photo. It had held the face of a little girl. She had short hair that was starting to develop thick ringlets and big brown eyes. She was the absolute image of perfection. He hadn't it to Maddie. "This is her."

She nodded and smiled sweetly. She looked back to her sketch in thought. She looked up when she saw the picture he was holding. She set the sketch down on the ledge and took the picture looking at Caitlyn. "She's adorable." She said sweetly looking back to Mathis smiling gently. "Where's her mother though, if you don't mind me asking that is." She siad softly with a questioning look

"Who knows," He said a bit harshly, but you could tell that it wasn't towards her. "She decided she didn't want a child and her and her family packed up and I haven't heard from them since. She did get a card in the mail on her 1st birthday though marked annonomous. I think it was her." He looked away from Maddie. She probably didn't care about this in the slightest.

She heard the harshness in her voice and automatically knew what that meant along with the first statement. She shook her head gently in thought. "If she didn't want a child she shouldn't have done what she did then." She said gently. "I know if that was to ever happen to me I would never give up my baby." She said as she handed the picture back to him. She brushed a few black and purple hairs from her bangs behind her ear as she looked at the sceanery the balcony towered over in thought.

"I am kind of glad she left," He said. "I have a feeling that if she would have stuck around she would have had my daughter taken away from me, and that would have killed me." His daughter is what kept him alive in his darkest of times. He would have gotten further and further into the dark.

She looked back to him and nodded. "Well, if she didn't have the decency to keep the baby, I think Caitlyn was better off with you anyways." She said sweetly smiling at him gently. She looked down to the sketch and watched as a light breeze flipped the previously drawn pages to a portrait of her mother she had done. She looked a lot like her mother and she hated hearing that now. She closed the sketch book quickly laying a hand on the cover.

Mathis was unsure of what to say. She seemed very into her art work and not so much into talking to him. This didn't bother him though, he did realize that this was a place to get away and be alone and that is probably what she was looking for. Some time to be alone. "Well I guess I will stop wasting your time." He said as he turned and nodded his head toward her.
