She looked to where he pointed and smiled. "I came from Mississippi. This place makes me feel like a small little girl lost somewhere compared to my hometown." She said gently looking to him with a sweet smile.

Calypso smiled a little. "Mississippi. That's a long way to come." He'd never been out of the city, actually. A fact made slightly more bearable simply because there was so much going on in New York. Just traveling to another part of the city could make you feel like you were a whole world away. He loved that. But he'd still love to travel. Thing is, his parents couldn't afford it. His grandparents, yes. But they weren't really willing to. Send a 17-year-old troublemaker off to see the world on his own? No way.

She looked to him then back to the school grounds and the city in the background. "I didn't have much of a choice." She said gently leaning against the ledge in thought. "My aunt lives in Brooklyn and she's the last living or able relative I have." She said gently looking down at her arms in thought.

Calypso didn't say anything. Really, there was nothing he could say to her. Chances were, if he opened his mouth to say something, he'd just end up making things worse. So he kept his mouth shut. Calypso wasn't good with anything serious. Her preferred the lighter, happier side to life. And he just couldn't deal well when things weren't like that. It was exactly why he tried to pretend all of his problems didn't exist, even when he knew they did. He sighed quietly. His problems. He didn't want to think about them... even if he knew he should. But soon enough, it would get dangerous. He squeezed his eyes closed, as if trying to push the thoughts out of his head. He would not let himself think about it again.

Her eyes traveled over the sceanery from the balcony ledge and she could help but feel happy. It may have been a big city and completely different from little ole' Bailey, Mississippi but it still had beauty. She looked back at him and gave him a gentle smile. "But, don't let me damper your day." She said gently to him then looked back to the city.

Calypso looked up at Maddie. "Sorry... stuck in my own thoughts for a second there." He sighed a little, and glanced at his CD player, still on pause. "Mind if I turn that on? Background noise," he explained. Calypso focused better when a lot was going on at once. So he preferred to listen to music while having a conversation, and preferred to have a conversation while listening to music. Besides that, the added noise might, if he was lucky, keep him from his thoughts. He was so sick of thinking.

She looked to him and nodded. "It's okay, everyone gets trapped in their thoughts every now and then." She said sweetly. She looked to his CD player and then him. She smiled gently. "Go ahead." She said sweetly.

Calypso pressed play, and the music could be heard coming out of his headphones, lying on the ground next to him. It wasn't too loud, really more as background music than anything else. He didn't say anything for a minute, as he listened to the song, then turned to Maddie. "What kind of music do you like?" he asked. Since she'd been singing earlier, it was obvious that she at least liked some kind of music. Which type she liked, though, he had no idea. He just hoped it wasn't that bubblegum-pop type, or country. Ew.

She nodded her head to the music gently looking around. She turned and pulled herself up on the ledge and looked down at him. "Anything other than rap or hip-hop or heavey metal. I wouldn't mind rap so much if they would actually be rapping about something other than sex all the time." She said sweetly looking at him.

"I don't mind rap and hip-hop, sometimes. If it's good. But if it sucks, well..." He shrugged. Calypso's favorite type of music was actually kind of alternative rock with some hip-hop aspects. Making it a little more dance-able, a little more fun to listen to. He was also pretty much addicted to anything labeled 'powerpop'. And as for songs about sex... he didn't mind, as long as they were done the right way. He was like that. Open to most lyrical content, but pickier when it came to sound. If the lyrics sucked, but the singer did an amazing job? He'd listen to it. If the lyrics were amazing, but the singer sucked? No thanks. Of course, he hoped to be good at both... writing lyrics, and singing them.

She had a big thing with jazz and classical music and always found it entertaining to sing with jazz. She nodded gently looking to her stuff. She walked over and picked up her guitar and then went back to where she was. She cleared off a few cigarette butts and sat down on the ground and just kind of messed around on the guitar playing parts from songs she knew that were playable on an accoustic. She looked up to him. "You play the guitar?" She asked sweetly

Calypso watched Maddie pick up her guitar and play a few things. Then, hearing the question, he nodded. "Since I was around ten or so." Calypso smiled, remembering. He'd demanded that his parents buy him one... as part of his education. Because how were they to know playing an instrument wasn't part of the required curriculum? They never payed much attention to his home schooling, always assuming he'd follow the textbooks. Yeah, right.

She smiled and nodded gently as she took her pick from the little pick holder on the back and just started to play something that came to her head. She looked back up to him as she played gently. "I've been playing since I was thirteen. I already knew how to play the piano, so it wasn't too hard to pick up." She said gently as her fingers worked on the music.

He laughed. "Lucky. It took me a while... I had to teach myself everything." Because while he'd convinced his parents to get him the instrument, he'd forgotten about asking for a teacher. So he'd bought a few music books, and just figured it out. Now he was actually quite good, and wrote his own songs. Lyrics, music, everything. Because he didn't exactly have a band.

She nodded gently. "I taught myself how to play, but it was easy because I already knew how to read music. I'm a whizz with a piano." She said smiling sweetly looking up at him. She used to play the piano and she was really good, but when she got into guitar and fell away from piano. She could still play like there was no tomorrow though.
