Calypso was quite expecting to hear a crunch as he stepped out onto the balcony. Cigarette butts. Everywhere. But he had to remind himself that there was no way they'd make a crunching noise. Oh well. With sigh, he kicked some aside. His first day at this school. And he seemed to have the option of either spending it in class, or on the balcony. Grudgingly, he had chosen the balcony. But the bits of old cigarettes were almost enough to change his mind. Calypso wasn't anti-smoker exactly... just anti-smoking. The smell alone was enough to keep him away from the stuff, not to mention the cancer, respiratory diseases... Cal was a trouble maker, and tended to have a short attention span, but he wasn't dumb. Dying early just because of smoking was definitely not worth it. But he wasn't one to stop others from doing it. After all, he'd had a few friends who were addicted to tobacco.
Pushing some more cigarette butts aside, he finally cleared a spot large enough to sit down in. So he did, placing the black messenger bag he carried almost everywhere beside him. It had everything the guy could need. CDs - yes, Calypso was one of those people that still used a CD player, permanent markers, some eyeliner, a water bottle. Random change, adding up to around 60 cents, at the most. Yes, those were Calypso's necessities. He sighed, stretching out his legs in front of him. A few more cigarette butts were knocked away by his old, faded green converse. The ones he wore just about every day. Green goes with anything and everything, he'd decided. And he was going to stick with the decision. Despite every weird look he'd ever gotten for it.
Calypso sighed again, glancing over at the entrance to the balcony. He was bored already. Cal wasn't easily entertained when alone. He pretty much needed people to keep him sane. Or insane. It was debatable which of the two he actually was. He shrugged to himself, taking out his CD player. After putting in Cute Is What We Aim For, he placed the headphones beside him and turned the volume all the way up. This way, he could easily hear the music without that annoying feeling of something covering his ears. Then, content enough, he stared at the entrance again as if willing someone with his mind to appear.

Maddie was sitting on the ledge of the balcony. She had her iPod up so loud she didn't hear any of the noises Calypso was making. She wasn't in veiw from where she was and she couldn't see him either. She looked down to her accoustic guitar and turned off her iPod. She took out her headphones and then picked up the guitar looking over the veiw from the ledge. She put the strap over her head and just started to play her frustration and sorrow away.
"I found myself today Oh I found myself and ran away But something pulled me back A voice of reason I forgot I had
All I know is you're not here to say What you always used to say But it's written in the sky tonight
So I won't give up No I won't break down Sooner than it seems life turns around And I will be strong Even if it all goes wrong When I'm standin' in the dark I'll still believe Someone's watching over me
I've seen that ray of light And it's shining on my destiny Shining all the time And I won't be afraid To follow everywhere it's taking me
All I know is yesterday is gone And right now I belong To this moment To my dreams
So I won't give up No I won't break down Sooner than it seems life turns around And I will be strong Even if it all goes wrong When I'm standin' in the dark I'll still believe Someone's watching over me
It doesn't matter what people say And it doesn't matter how long it takes Believe in yourself and you'll find It only matters how true you are Be true to yourself and follow your heart
So I won't give up No I won't break down Sooner than it seems life turns around And I will be strong Even if it all goes wrong When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
That I won't give up No I won't break down Sooner than it seems life turns around And i will be strong Even if it all goes wrong When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe Someone's watching over Someone's watching over Someone's watching over me
Oh oh Someone's watching over me"
Her soft violet eyes just traveled over the rather beautiful veiw of the school grounds and the background of Brooklyn and New York City behind it.

Calypso blinked, pretty sure he had just heard a noise. And not from the direction he'd be expecting. He paused his CD player, listening again. Yes, definitely something. Music, maybe? He sighed. Unless he was going crazy... Imagining music, or something. He couldn't see where it would be coming from. So crazy was seeming more and more like a good possibility. But still. Worth investigating. So he stayed quiet, listening carefully for the direction the music was coming from. Finally, after about a minute, he was sure. Now time to see if he was crazy. He leaned his body to the side, and suddenly he could see the rest of the balcony.
And a girl. With a guitar. Singing. He was tempted to start singing, too. Except he'd be singing the song he was just listening to... and Calypso had a feeling the two sounds would not mix well together. Oh well. He sighed. At least not he knew he wasn't crazy. He stayed leaning in that position, not sure whether to start a conversation or to leave the girl alone. She didn't seem to want company... But then again, he did. So he'd be difficult, and make her notice him. Calypso grinned evilly. Then, after a second. He started singing. Quite well, actually. But the two songs still just didn't go well.

She played her guitar as she looked out to the sceanery. She then heard a completely different song and thought she was imagining things. She listened for a moment then stopped playing. She listened and looked around. She got off the balcony setting her guitar down and her attention turned to the source of the noise. "Oh, I didn't realize I wasn't alone up here." She said gently looking to Calypso. She looked to her stuff then back to him. "How, much of that did you hear?" She asked gently looking back at him with those piercing violet eyes of hers.

Calypso laughed, hearing the girl. "Me either. And then I heard you singing... thought I was going crazy, until I moved a little. And then I realized you were here." He nodded, with a smile. "I didn't hear much. Only maybe half a minute of it, before I started singing." Calypso has actually... un-exaggerating? He'd made it sound like less, simply because it seemed like the girl hadn't want him to hear. Since she was now where he could see her anyway, Calypso moved back into the position he'd been in before... much more comfortable. And then yawned slightly. "Too tired.." he mumbled to himself, before looking at the girl again. He'd forgotten she was there, already. In those two seconds or so. Wow, he must be tired. Sleep deprivation. Calypso, lately, had been staying up until around 4 or 5 a.m. listening to music, trying to get ideas.

She smiled gently and nodded. "Okay." She said sweetly. She watched him for a minute and giggled at him. She surprisingly had her hair down today, and the colorful streaks of purple, blue, and red that ran through her black hair were more noticable. Much more. She looked around then down at him. "You know, it helps to sleep every now and then to get a good idea or two." She said sweetly watching him.

"Sleep," he said with a nod, "Is good." Calypso yawned again. "I'll just sleep in class... when a decide to go to class." He smiled. Cal was surprisingly good at getting away with falling asleep in his classes. Teachers rarely noticed, and when they did... Well, he could usually talk his way out of it. He ran is hands through his hair, pushing it out of his face. But of course, within a few seconds, his hair was right back where it had been. "I work better in the middle of the night," Calypso explained. He was weird like that. All his best songs had come that way. And as for the songs he wrote during the day? He hardly ever bothered to finish them, and when he did... they ended up pretty awful. One of them, he'd read over the lyrics again at his normal working times (when normal people were asleep) and he'd realized it was missing a few words. And adding the needed words messed up the rhythm.

She nodded gently. "Late night work is understandable. I'm better with stuff at night sometimes too." She said kicking a few cigarette buts way. She looked up at him and walked over to him. "I'm Maddison by the way, but you can call me Maddie." She said sweetly holding out a hand for him to shake as she looked down at him.

He nodded, shaking her hand. "I'm Calypso." He smiled a little. He loved to say his own name... he was weird like that. But not everyone got a name like his. Some people were stuck with names like Bob, or Fred. Which he had nothing against, it's just that he thought they were boring. His parents were about as weird as he was, though. They renamed themselves in their 20's... as in anniversary thing. Rain and October. But for some reason, his parents liked to give their kids Greek-originating names. His, Calypso, meant 'hidden'. And his sister, Callista, had a name meaning 'very beautiful'... or something like that.

She looked at him and smiled. "Interesting name you got there." She said sweetly. "What is that Greek originating?" She asked sweetly as she brushed her hair behind an ear. She didn't know everything about Greek mythology, but she knew a few things and found Greek folklore very interesting.

Calypso nodded. "Except I think the original Calypso was a girl..." He laughed. "Oh well." He looked at Maddie, tilting his head to the side slightly, as he tried to figure out whether she'd meant interesting in a good way or a bad way. He'd heard it used as both before. After a second, Calypso shrugged a little to himself. It didn't really matter. She'd think what she thinks about his name whether he agreed or not. No use thinking about it so much. He had a hard enough time just staying awake. So staying awake and thinking? Too much work. Calypso sighed. He really needed a nap or something.

She smiled gently and nodded her head. "Yeah, Calypso was the leader of a colony of nothing but women, and she trapped Oddiseus on her island for... five years... I think, or somewhere in that area." She said sweetly as she turned and walked over to the ledge. She leaned against it tiredly and looked out over the city that surrounded the school. "I didn't know that it could be considered a guy's name." She said sweetly looking back to him. She never had, and that's what she found so interesting. She had heard a few names that went for guys and girls but Calypso had never entered her mind as a multi-gender name.

"Well," he said, sighing, "At least, if I've got to be named after a woman, I was named after a powerful woman." He pulled his legs up, bending his knees and resting his chin on top. "Yeah. It's that 'o' ending, gives it a bit more masculinity. Makes it work for both genders... sort of." Calypso smiled a little. He was trying to be polite. But this girl, Maddie, came off a bit as a know-it-all. He sighed again. Maybe he was being unfair. He tilted his head, to look over at her by the ledge. He didn't have to like everyone. And he knew he shouldn't feel like he had to. But still... He couldn't expect everyone to be like his old friends. Or to be like him. So he wouldn't decide against Maddie just yet. Maybe it was the sleep deprivation, making him disagreeable.

She looked at him and nodded. She sort of got the feeling that he had picked up the wrong vibe when she had been talking about Calypso. She was only telling him what she knew about her. She looked to the city in though. "So, where are you from?" She asked gently after a moment

He decided he had been being a bit unfair. Definitely. So, even though she couldn't read his thoughts, he smiled to make up for it. He would not let his lack of sleep keep him from being his usual, people-liking self. "Over there," he said, pointing vaguely in the general direction of where he lived. He had, after all, grown up right in the city. He smiled again, his eyes focusing now on the view of New York. He loved it. So many different types of people. More than he was sure could be found in any other single city in the world. Their were your homeless bums, rich snobs, crazy artists, the people looking to become famous... And everything in between.
